Gridded emissions of key air pollutants from domestic burning of solid fuels (wood, coal or manufactured solid fuel (MSF)) in Scotland. These emissions were generated from newly available fuel use and emission factor data, spatially distributed using population, land use and household Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) data. They were used in EMEP4UK modelling of air pollutant concentrations in Scotland caused by domestic solid fuel burning.

Provenance & quality

Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) data was processed to extract information on fuel use. Solid fuel used classified as wood, anthracite, manufactured solid fuel or coal.
EPC data was linked to postcode using One Scotland Gazetteer (OSG) Unique Property Reference Number (UPRN) reference and aligned to centroid of postcode area.
Household data were aggregated by output area then census data zone. Percentages of households using solid fuel for primary and secondary heat sources calculated for each output area. Output areas were also classified as urban or rural using the Scottish 2022 census 8-fold Urban-rural classification, and as smoke control areas if over 50% of output area is within a smoke control area polygon.
The population burning within each data zone was assigned according to a gridded population dataset. Emission totals based on total solid fuel use and emission factor data for fuel types and appliance distributions were then distributed using the population data and rural/urban/smoke control area definitions.
The fuel use distribution and emissions estimates were compared with previous estimates. The spatial distribution of total solid fuel emissions was visualised in maps of the whole of Scotland and details of areas of interest.
