Acknowledgements required (third-party datasets used to drive the model): Meteorology from the Weather Research & Forecasting (WRF) model has been used to drive the EMEP4UK model. The fifth-generation European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) atmospheric reanalysis of the global climate (ERA5) was used as initial and boundary conditions, and to nudge the WRF model.

Further information and help »

This dataset includes daily averaged atmospheric composition for the UK for key air pollutants nitrogen, sulphur, particulates and ozone for the years 2022 - 2024. The dataset was generated with the European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme for the UK (EMEP4UK) model version 5.0, modified to improve wet deposition rates. The underlying meteorology was generated using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model version 4.4.2. The UK emissions were taken from the 2025 release of the National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory (NAEI), with base year 2023.

Provenance & quality

Daily average concentrations for a model domain covering the UK, with a grid resolution of about 3 km x 3 km, were calculated using the EMEP4UK atmospheric chemistry transport model. The model was evaluated using the UK Automatic Urban and Rural Network (AURN) monitoring stations. R was used to access the AURN dataset to evaluate the EMEP4UK model output.

Key input data to the EMEP4UK model (version 5.0 with slightly modified wet deposition) include:
- anthropogenic emissions for the UK from the National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory (released 2025, base year 2023);
- anthropogenic emissions for the Republic of Ireland from MapEire;
- anthropogenic emissions for Europe from the Centre for Emissions Inventories and Projections;
- UK land surface data from the Land Cover Map 2015; and
- European land cover data and other default EMEP model inputs from the EMEP repository.

The deposited data were processed from the full EMEP4UK model output to a subset containing essential variables only. The netCDF Operators tools, version 5.3.3, were used to subset the model output.
