The data contains camera-trap observations of birds and mammals, including wild and domestic species, recorded along the River Kelvin corridor within the Glasgow City Council region, Scotland. The dataset includes the names of species observed and number of individuals detected per observation event alongside the date, time and location of detection.
30 camera traps were placed at 10 sites along the River Kelvin in Glasgow with cameras at 0, 250 and 500 m from the river at each site at 0.5-1 m above ground level on trees or posts. Data was collected from 21 March - 22 September 2023, with images and videos captured when animals triggered the cameras. Images were analysed by an AI processor and further investigated by an image analyst. Location-specific data was acquired via QGIS and land cover maps.
The resource comprises three CSV files: `Mammal_CamTrap_Data.csv`, `Avian_CamTrap_Data.csv` and `Study_Site_Data.csv`. The mammal and avian files contain post-processed observations which identify the species and number of individuals. The study-site file provides camera locations and environmental variables, including elevation, land cover and distances from key habitat features.
The dataset provides information on the occurrence and abundance of birds and mammals detected by camera traps across an urban riparian corridor in Glasgow. It is hoped to be of use for analysing patterns of urban biodiversity and evidencing the value of riparian corridors for providing connectivity within cities.
Data was collected by Glasgow as a Living Lab Accelerating Novel Transformation (GALLANT) Work Package Two and funded by the Natural Environmental Research Council as part of the Changing the Environment Programme (Grant NE/W005042/1), with the aim of recording urban biodiversity.

Provenance & quality
30 Browning Recon Force Elite HP5 camera traps were placed at 10 sites along the River Kelvin in Glasgow with cameras at 0, 250 and 500 m from the river at each site at 0.5-1 m above ground level on trees or posts. Data were initially analysed used AI software ('CameraTrapDetectoR') to identify whether the image subject was a mammal, bird, human, vehicle or was empty. After filtering for images of mammals and birds, subjects were identified and counted by an image analyst and noted in an excel spreadsheet. Data files here are post-processing.
Site-specific environmental predictors were also gathered for analysis. Distance of each site from the River Clyde and River Kelvin was calculated using the QNEAT3 plugin in QGIS. Proportion land cover of the three main habitat types - urban, woodland and grassland habitat - within a 125m buffer around each sampling point was calculated from the UK CEH Land Cover Map 2021.
Files were converted from Excel spreadsheets to CSV format for further analysis and data upload.
